Orono Soccer Club Coaching Programs

Recreational Program - U5-U8
The Recreation Player will work on the fundamentals of the game through fun and exciting, high energy coaching. At Orono Thunder Soccer Club we call it the "Turn on Phase". The soccer player will play small sided games to understand the team aspect of the game, get maximum touches on the ball and pick up the rules of the game.

It is very important at this level to take the first steps to learn the game.   As their first experience in soccer, it is critical that it be an enjoyable experience for both player and their parents.   We focus on developing the all around soccer player.

The recreational coaches are generally volunteer parents but may be high school or college student who are building a foundation for coaching and have a desire and passion to work with kids through the game of soccer.

Orono Soccer Travel U9-U18
The club retains coaches at a variety of coaching levels and abilities.  From the dedicated parent volunteers to coaches who have been working with the club or the DOC for years as professional trainers.  It is common for the club to develop a coach who is still finishing their academic career and to benefit by their experience for many years.  Our goal is to retain the very best coaches for multiple seasons.

U9-U10 teams are generally volunteer coaches, however, to both provide a foundation for developing coaches, and to expose young players to current or recently active players, the club will supplement coaching at this level through assigned assistant coaching positions and as trainers.  A commitment at this level may be for part of the season to a full year round training commitment.

All coaches U11 and above are non-volunteer.  This age is a very important stage of long term player development.  The players at Orono are highly motivated to improve their overall athletic ability and their soccer skills and knowledge.  As a coaching staff, we challenge ourselves to continue to study the game and to provide deeper training opportunities to each athlete.  Orono provides various levels of team and individual training opportunities year round.  Team training commitments by coaches may begin as early as February and end in July.  Coaching positions for the fall season are also available on a select basis.
